From Print to Dimensional: Why More Shops Are Making the Leap
Guest post with Wendy Graves, Partner with Make It Happen
The topic of print shops wanting to move into dimensional signage comes up in almost every training I teach.
A shop owner will pull me aside and say something like:
“We get asked for dimensional signs all the time… but we are nervous to expand, so we stick to print.”
And I completely understand why.
Recently, I had the opportunity to be part of a conversation about how to effectively and efficiently add dimensional lettering into your product offerings. Alongside Gemini’s Ellen Robertson, we discussed opportunities for revenue growth, identifying common misconceptions, products that would be easy to start with, and how to find a supportive manufacturing partner.
Dimensional signage can feel like a big step if you’ve spent years focused on flat graphics. There are different materials, processes, and installation considerations. It can feel like stepping into unfamiliar territory.
But here’s the truth I shared: Many of the best sign shops didn’t start out doing everything.
They learned. They asked questions. They partnered with the right vendors. Little by little, they expanded their capabilities.
When expansion is at your doorstep, you can say “no,” or you can find a way to say “absolutely” and instantly open the door to new revenue opportunities.
The Moment Most Shops Realize They’re Missing Something
There’s usually a moment when it becomes clear. A client asks for something beyond print.
Maybe it’s:
- Dimensional lobby lettering
- ADA signage
- Architectural logos
- Illuminated elements
At that moment, the shop either says:
“We don’t do that.”
Or…
“Let me see what I can find.”

That second response is where growth begins, solution focused. This allows you, the sign expert, to shine with knowledge-based support.
Don’t Start with Doing It All
One of the biggest misconceptions about dimensional signage is that you need to become a one stop fabrication shop instantly.
You don’t.
Many successful companies operate as signage solution providers.
- They design or support creative side of the project.
- They guide the material selection and educate the client.
- They coordinate with trusted manufacturing partners.
- They manage installation.
What they are really doing is solving the client’s problem and leveraging other’s resources to fill the gaps. That’s where the true value lies.
How to Choose the Right Dimensional Signage Partner
If you’re expanding into dimensional signage, the next big question usually becomes:
“Who do we trust to help us produce it?”
Not every partner is the same, and choosing the right one can make or break your confidence when stepping into dimensional work.
Here are a few things I encourage sign shops to look for.

Industry Experience Matters
Look for partners who truly understand the sign industry, not just someone who can make parts.
A good partner understands:
- Installation realities
- Material performance
- How signs are used in the field
- Ease of quoting process
That experience can save you from mistakes you didn’t even know to ask about.
Willingness to Educate
The best partners don’t just take orders they help you learn. Seeking those who have the “heart of a teacher” will further the expansion of your product offerings. Building confidence in you and the team for long term closing success.
They’ll walk through material options, explain mounting methods, and help you think through a project so you can confidently guide your client.
Those are the partners that help shops grow.
Consistency and Communication
Dimensional signage projects often have multiple moving pieces: deadlines, fabrication timelines, shipping schedules, and installation details.
A trusted partner communicates clearly and consistently so you’re never guessing where a project stands.
They Help You Look Good
At the end of the day, your client sees you as the expert.
A trusted manufacturing partner values a solution-focused approach, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving should issues arise. Because when a project succeeds, everyone wins.
Dimensional Signage Changes the Conversation
Flat graphics will always have a place.
But dimensional signage brings something different.
Depth. Presence. Durability. Impact.
Think about the difference between a printed logo panel and a dimensional logo mounted off the wall with lighting or shadow lines.
One communicates information.
The other creates an experience.
And more clients today are looking for that experience, something that helps them stand out, capture attention, and elevate their brand.
The Confidence Gap
What I see more than anything isn’t a capability gap.
It’s a confidence gap.
People worry they’ll quote something wrong. Order the wrong material. Miss installation details.
So, they choose to operate where they feel safe. And it makes total sense.
But the reality is this industry is full of people willing to share knowledge.
Setting yourself and your team up for success starts with training. The key is to start small, don’t jump too far ahead. Pick one product to add within the next month. Possibly start with ¼” PVC or Acrylic letters. Design it as applied directly to the wall with tape mount. This is a common sign project throughout the industry, and you can master with confidence.
Once you learn materials, mounting methods, and fabrication options, the mystery starts to disappear, and the client solutions start to shine.

A Simple Mindset Shift
Here’s the shift I encourage shops to make.
Stop thinking of yourself as just a print shop. Start thinking of yourself as a sign partner.
Your job isn’t just producing graphics.
Your job is helping clients bring their brand into the physical world.
Sometimes that’s print.
Sometimes it’s dimensional.
Sometimes it’s something they didn’t even know existed.
And that’s where your expertise comes in.
Let’s Figure It Out, Together
One of the things I love most about the print and sign industry is that there is always something new to learn, no matter how long you’ve been doing this.
Dimensional signage isn’t about abandoning what you already do well.
It’s about expanding your toolbox so when a client asks for something bigger, you can confidently say:
“Yes, let’s work on finding a solution to that.”
And those are often the projects that open the next chapter of growth, team inspiration, and client solution support.
If you’re thinking about taking that step, ask yourself: What requests am I currently saying no to?
- Identify a trusted manufacturing partner who can help you understand that product.
- Seek out training and education so your team feels confident with product onboarding.
- Start the conversation internally with your team about introducing a new product category.
And the next time a client asks for something beyond print… say yes and explore the opportunity.
Because growth in this industry rarely comes from doing the same things we’ve always done.
It comes from being willing to learn the next thing. Take the leap!
